(SALT LAKE CITY, Utah) - Following decisions regarding the Swallow investigative committee and the changes to Utah’s open meeting laws that the GOP leadership in the Utah House deemed necessary, Matt Lyon, Executive Director of the Utah Democratic Party, issued the following statement,

“With their votes today, Utah’s GOP leadership has thrown away the precedent that Utah legislative ethics probes are non-partisan, using the super majority to assure that the investigation into the GOP Attorney General would be controlled by members of his own party. This move sends a message that Republican leadership is more interested in keeping their power than in restoring the sense of fairness and integrity that, as we are learning, is clearly lacking in many areas of our state government.”

“As if it is not enough to destroy the precedent of non-partisan committees for ethical issues like these, the Republican committee chair, who is appointed by the Speaker, will control who will be called as witnesses, who will get immunity, the scope of the investigation, and when the doors to the investigation will be slammed shut to the public. It is clear that, despite the severity of the crisis, legislative leadership has decided to play politics—and they have done so at every turn.”
