(LOS ANGELES, Calif) - Dixie State University southpaw starter Sam Friend was named to the Jewish Sports Review’s 2013 College Baseball All-America Team for NCAA Divisions II/III and the NAIA in the magazine’s July/August issue. Friend was one of just two honorees west of the Rocky Mountains by the bi-monthly periodical.

The magazine tabbed Friend as their “eighth inning man (also a starter)” in an all-star quality, seven-man fantasy rotation. A native of Las Vegas, Friend closed the 2013 regular season with a 6-1 record and a solid 2.08 ERA, the best mark of those honored on the list. He held opponents to a .214 batting average in 10 appearances.

Not included in the totals was a quality start against Chico State in the 2013 NCAA West Baseball Regional. Friend tossed 6.2 innings of one-run, six hit baseball in a tough 1-0 loss to the Wildcats eliminating the Red Storm from the postseason.

In previous accolades, Friend was named to the Pacific West Conference Third Team.

The Jewish Sports Review, based in Southern California, is the ultimate guide as to who is Jewish in the world of sports. Yearly, the periodical selects Jewish All-America College teams in baseball, football, basketball, softball, soccer and lacrosse.
