(SALT LAKE CITY, Utah) - In response to recent votes and statements from members of Utah’s GOP delegation regarding immigration reform, Utah Democratic Party Chair Jim Dabakis issued the following statement Friday:

“The truth is emerging. Representatives Bishop, Chaffetz, Stewart and Senator Lee clearly lack respect for our Utah Hispanic brothers and sisters, and any other of Utah’s immigrant communities. It’s shameful, and their grandstanding demonstrates a desire to put ideology and partisanship ahead of their constituents, especially when recent polls show 71% of Utahns support bipartisan immigration reform."

"This is not a GOP vs Democratic issue - it is human issue. Senator Hatch was absolutely correct when he stood up for the DREAMERS, but the rest of Utah’s GOP delegation is soulless. Demanding legions of children be deported to a county they have never visited, never met or remembered, lacks any and all compassion. Stewart’s ideological hardline of ‘no path to citizenship, no way, no how,’ lacks all sense of compromise, destroying hope, and putting in its place fear. Where is the common decency? Does our GOP Congressional delegation have no shame?”
